| McGovern Animal Clinic was born in the back of a Toyota Hatchback (specifically a 1975 white with blue racing stripes model), not a very auspicious beginning, but a beginning... | |||||||||||||||||||

| Dr. Mary Sue McGovern, a 1977 graduate of TAMU started the practice, after completing a specialty internship at LSU in Equine Medicine and Surgery. She came to Magnolia (not a native Texan, but you know the song!) to work for an equine practitioner. The veterinarian was more interested in racehorses and left the area 4 months after Dr. McGovern signed on as an Associate. So she decided that there was no time like the present and being young (and broke) decided to start her own practice. She traveled a 35 - 40 mile radius working on horses that belonged to anyone that would call. She also developed a repertoire of different voices to assist her in her many roles. Many clientele assumed that she was the "nurse" when she arrived to work on their horses and asked several times when the doctor would arrive. However after a period of time, they became acclimated to the idea of a female practitioner and were happy to have someone to help their animals. | |||||||||||||||||||

Dr. McGovern purchased the property on Spur 149 in 1981. She shortly thereafter moved a mobile home on the property and continued her equine ambulatory practice for another 3 years. She also decided to diversify the practice and start to work on some dogs and cats due to client demand.

| The first official McGovern Animal Clinic facility was a 100 year old farm house that was purchased and moved to the property. The house had originally been at the J-3 Ranch, owned by Lester Goodson, on FM 1774. This ranch has now been developed into High Meadow Ranch. The house was renovated into a facility that had a combination waiting/reception area, one exam room, and a combination treatment/pharmacy/x-ray/processing room/bathroom (still stuck on developing x-rays in the bathroom). The clinic also had a combination office, boarding area, and surgery. At this time, Dr. McGovern also hired her first associate, Dr. Cynthia Medlock, who is now Dr. Cynthia McManis, Cat doctor Extraordinaire in The Woodlands. | |||||||||||||||||||

Along the course of its development, the clinic (herein after to be known as "The Clinic") started to collect its share of clinic animals. Notice that this responsibility was blamed on "The Clinic" and not its occupants (this is still done today). There have been many, many other animals that have lived at "The Clinic", some for a short time until another home was found, others for many years. All of them have left their mark on our hearts.
| McGovern Animal Clinic was operated out of the farmhouse until 1995 when Dr. McGovern decided that "things were getting a little crowded" and it was time to build the "Dream Clinic". The present facility was completed in 1996 and a move-in was completed in one day. Many long time clients have fond memories of the "little farmhouse" especially exemplified on the day of moving when Dr. McGovern had to retrieve a client trying to climb in to the old clinic after it was jacked up on blocks. The little farmhouse now lives on Superior Rd. and serves as a home for employees of a beautiful horse farm. So it too, went to a good home.
The new facility was opened in 1996 and has been a definite asset to the McGovern Animal Clinic, P.C. in its goal to offer high quality compassionate care to our patients and their owners. The practice has continued to grow and sometimes there are lots of new faces. We hope that this little bit will help you to know us a little better and also make you smile.
